During the Plains Indian Wars, the United States government had outlawed Native American spirituality and the buffalo were almost completely wiped out by the government and white American settlers. One of these communities was the Lakota Sioux. In the late 1800s, many Native American communities lost their homes and traditions due to the expansion of the United States into the Great Plains.
